Pumpkin Pie

Trader Joe’s Fearless Flyer caught my eye with an article in the Thanksgiving Edition.  “Pumpkin Pie is the flag ship Thanksgiving dessert”. “Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Pie, were sticking to what is now tried and true: a tender, hand crafted crust filled with silky, sweet, spiced pumpkin custard.”

I have a fondness for good pumpkin pie and i am intrigued.

Pumpkin Pie rating: One fork for a flaky crust that holds up to the filling. One fork for spices that are not over powering. One fork for velvet texture filling. One fork for presentation. One fork for price point.

the only thing left to do is to try several pies.

King Soopers 8″ home style Pumpkin Pie has a consistent flaky crust. it cuts well and the spiced filling is a velvety and a delight rating is 5 forks.Trader Joe’s crust appears to be hand crimped at the edges. the filling is tight – yet velvety. Rates 5 forks. TJ Sam’s Pumpkin pie is sold as a larger pie. The crust is more flaky and the edge did not stand up to cutting (the broken crust did not get served). It did not matter to our guests as the filling was the focus. The pumpkin filling is a bit more granular – however the spices are spot on. Rating is 4 1/2 forks.

To finish off the pie a dollop of whipped cream is required – for Frances was found to say pie with out whipped cream is not a finished pie presentation.

I find that I am a bit more of a purist. I like the pumpkin to be the focus and will skip the cream.
